Archeologia: Polizzello & Raffe

Mussomeli’s territory is characterised by numerous archaeological site of great interest, two of which are Polizzello and Raffe.

Polizzello was founded by the “sicano” who settled there in the Bronze Age. Also several graves dug in the rock dating from the seventh century BC can be found here. In many of these man made  caves statuettes & terracotta vases were discovered.

American and Sicilian archaeologists have unearthed a greek settlement of the fourth and fifth centuries BC at Raffe. Which has all the features of a polis (city) inhabited by thousands of people.

Visit the Castello di Mussomeli

The Chiaramonte Castle, built in 1370 in Norman-Gothic style stands on a high crag at 778 meters, 2 km outside of Mussomeli. Retaining many of its original features including the chapel with a precious alabaster depicting the Madonna dell Catena. Read more...
